Youth Group Game – Bum Bum Scoot
Basic Idea of this free Youth Ministry Game
The essence of the game is a dynamic, musical chairs-inspired activity that involves participants scooting from one chair to another in a circle, with one or more players in the center attempting to claim an open seat. This fast-paced game encourages quick reactions, strategy, and a lot of laughter as players vie for the limited number of seats. We’ve also seen youth groups call this game Musical Chairs Dash, Circle Slide showdown, and slide & sit scramble.
Supplies Needed
- Chairs: Equal to the number of participants, minus the number intended to start in the middle.
- Careful of what chairs you use – chair games can pose a risk to fingers as students fling themselves into empty seats.
- Open space: Sufficient to arrange chairs in a large circle.
Time to Play
- Setup: 5 minutes to arrange chairs and explain the rules.
- Gameplay: 5-10 minutes, adjustable based on group size and interest.
Explaining the Rules
- Setup: Arrange chairs in a circle, facing inward, with one less chair than the number of players.
- Starting the Game: All players, except for one (or more, as the game progresses), sit in the chairs. The player(s) without a chair stand in the center of the circle.
- Movement: On a signal, the person to the left of an empty chair “scoots” to fill it, leaving their previous chair vacant. This triggers a chain reaction around the circle.
- Objective for Center Players: Players in the center aim to sit in a newly vacated chair before the next person can move into it. Once successful, the person who was supposed to move into that chair goes to the center.
- Increasing Difficulty: After a few rounds, increase the challenge by adding more players to the center, thereby having more open chairs and more competition.
- Winning: The game continues with players rotating in and out of the center. There’s no defined end; play as long as interest and excitement persist, or set a timer for a predetermined end.
Level of Effort Needed to Plan the Game
- Preparation Effort: Low. The game requires minimal setup, primarily arranging chairs and a brief explanation of rules.
- Supervision: Moderate. Ensure that the game remains safe and fun, monitoring to prevent overly aggressive behavior and to assist with rule clarification.
- Adaptability: High. The game can easily be adjusted for different group sizes, spaces, and time constraints.
This activity is excellent for fostering teamwork, agility, and social interaction among participants, making it ideal for youth groups, team-building sessions, or casual gatherings looking for an energetic and inclusive game.
